Nike Phantom

Phantom is, at Nike, the name of a football line, and that origin explains why these shoes look different from the rest of the range. They are not designed to sit on the street, but to strike a ball.

Why a football boot is so smooth

When shooting and receiving, every irregularity on the instep counts. That is why laces on this type of shoe are often hidden or shifted, and the upper runs as tight as possible over the foot. Where a sneaker uses overlays for reinforcement, a football boot uses them to guide contact with the ball. That makes the silhouette lower and smoother than you might expect from Nike.

The sole shows where it belongs

Under these models there are no waffle soles but cleats or studs, matched to the surface: natural grass, artificial turf or an indoor court. The designation of that is usually included in the model name itself, and completely determines where you can use the shoe.

Note: Phantom is also a color name

There is a second reason you encounter this name. Nike also uses Phantom as a color designation for a broken, grayish white. A sneaker with Phantom in the name therefore need not have anything to do with the football line — it can simply be the color. The same name, two completely different things.
