The SB Low is the Dunk Low that moved into the skate division in 2002, and you feel the difference before you see it. The tongue is thick and padded like a cushion, inside there’s a cushioning midsole with a springy chamber under the heel, and elastic straps on the inside of the tongue keep it in place. On the outside the silhouette stayed virtually true to the 1985 original — and that exact combination made it something new.
Why skaters wanted a basketball shoe
The flat sole with its serrated edge gave board feel, the low silhouette allowed freedom of movement, and the large leather panels could take a beating. What was missing was impact cushioning and a tongue that wouldn’t slip; the SB version solved that on the inside without reworking the exterior. The shoe thus became the rare example of a sports model that picked up a second sport without changing shape.
The canvas of collaborations
The SB Low became the model on which skate shops and designers could tell their stories: the large panels can be colored panel by panel, and the small runs made each pair an event.
