About Nike Alphafly

Nike Alphafly

The Alphafly is the shoe in which the marathon was run in under two hours. When Eliohud Kipchoge broke that barrier in Vienna in 2019, he stood on a prototype of this model, and the uproar that followed was about the shoe, not the time: international federations then set rules for maximum sole height and the number of plates allowed.

The construction explains that commotion. In the sole are two separate Zoom Air units under the forefoot, visible as windows on both sides, with a carbon plate running the full length beneath them. Around that is a thick block of the lightest foam Nike makes, with the name printed on the sole edge. The upper is a finely woven layer that hardly weighs anything, with the swoosh in contrast across the side.

The combination of springy foam and a stiff plate returns energy with every step, which makes the running feel fundamentally different from an ordinary running shoe. It is explicitly race material: the sole wears faster and the price is correspondingly high.

Within the lineup the Nike Vaporfly is the lighter, lower sister line for shorter distances, while the Nike Vomero Plus shows how the same foam is applied in a daily trainer.
