Look at this shoe from the side and you see two. The front is a running shoe from the late seventies: narrow toe, low sole, an outsole full of small studs in the waffle pattern Nike started with. But move your eye back and the sole swells into a large visible air chamber. Two eras joined together in one midsole that runs from thin to thick.
That was exactly the brief. Nike took the shape of the Daybreak and the waffle sole from the same years, and put an Air Max unit under it. The name refers to Steve Prefontaine, the runner who at Nike was simply called Pre.
There’s something else you only notice if you look closely. The black outsole is speckled with light flecks, as if the rubber came from different batches. That’s right: it contains ground production waste and old footwear. The panels and the suede are also made from recycled material. The shoe was released as the starting point of a series in which Nike focused on material use, and you can literally read that on the sole.
The upper itself is intentionally kept bare: ripstop nylon, a smooth side panel and a swoosh that lies flat on the material. No layers, no windows, no decoration. Everything that draws attention is underneath.
