Nike Air Max Portal

The Air Max Portal is one of the newer silhouettes in the Air Max family, and the name refers to what you see under the heel: a large open window where the air unit protrudes, like a view into the sole. Where older models hide their air unit behind a small window, this model literally shows it through the sole.

The design leans on the visual language of the classics. Ribs run along the side that recall the Nike Air Max Plus, with a swoosh that sits small and low on the toe instead of large across the panel. The lacing is hidden under a closed flap, which makes the upper look sleek and sealed, and the model designation is printed on the tongue.

That closed look combined with the open sole is the game the model plays: show as little as possible on top, as much as possible underneath. It fits with the recent direction of the family, in which Nike increasingly highlights its cushioning technology.
