Turn an RC30 over and you see something you rarely find on a sneaker. The outsole is a row of coarse sawteeth, and in almost every tooth the brand name is cast into the rubber. It’s a detail you only discover when you pick the shoe up, and precisely for that reason nice: the manufacturer went to the trouble for a surface that nobody sees.
The letters RC stand for racing, and the silhouette comes from a time when racing shoes had to be as light and thin as possible. The upper is nylon with coarsely brushed suede on the toe, the heel and along the sole edge, with an N that sits large across the side. The shoe is low, narrow and light, with a thin midsole that adds virtually no height.
That makes the RC30 one of the most stripped-down models in this cluster. Where the 1000 and the 725 show their era with layers and panels, the RC30 does the opposite: everything off that isn’t necessary. Together with the RC42 it forms the racing branch of New Balance on this site.
