About New Balance 878
New Balance 878: the model everyone skipped
While the 990 and the 574 grew into mainstays, the 878 stayed where it was for decades. It appeared in 2000 as a progressive running shoe, did its job neatly and then disappeared from the conversation. Only in recent years did New Balance bring it back, and then it became clear what had been lying in the drawer all that time: a shoe that fits precisely with the turn-of-the-century taste for technology.
The construction lays out its own evidence. On the rear panel 878 is embroidered into the material, the N is a large outlined appliqué without further ornament, and there’s a pull tab at the heel to get the shoe on. Underfoot sits the sculptural ABZORB midsole that gives the model its character: not a smooth block but a wall full of cut-out grooves and waves, with a profiled outsole that leans toward trail. The upper stacks suede and mesh in loose panels over one another, with reflective piping along the seams.
Within the New Balance family, the 878 fills a gap you only notice when it’s placed next to the others. The 740 is the streamlined 2000s runner, the 1906 the shiny maximalist with its technology on display, and the 878 sits exactly between them: muted and robust, but without visible chambers or metallic lines. If you want a Y2K silhouette without the show, this is it.
The scarcity is therefore not marketing but simply the legacy of a model that never became big. On this page there are a handful of versions, and the supply remains low while the familiar numbers peak. That makes it interesting for anyone who prefers to wear something not everyone already has.
