New Balance 1500: the English answer to the American top range
New Balance has two factories where its most expensive shoes come from, and the 1500 belongs to the English one. Since the late 1980s it has been made in Flimby, the same place the 991 comes from. Where the American 990 range builds full and wide, the 1500 goes the opposite way: a slim, low silhouette that looks faster than it is.
The shoe wears its technology visibly. The model number is printed large on the heel block, and ENCAP is pressed into the midsole wall in full, the cushioning construction where a soft core sits inside a firmer rim. You see the same construction on the 574, only here it’s wrapped on a finer last with stacked panels of suede, mesh and smooth leather.
Among British enthusiasts the 1500 has a status the model never quite achieved outside England. It appeared in small runs, often in collaboration with shops from the United Kingdom, and thus became a collectible while in the rest of the world it remained simply a good running shoe. Versions with a number after the dot, like 1500.9, mark specific runs within that tradition.
