Merrell Agility Peak 5

The Agility Peak 5 is the trail shoe with which Merrell places the most volume under the sole. While the brand is mainly known for its hiking shoes, this is an unmistakable running model: a thick, two-tone stacked midsole that flares out broadly at the heel, with a coarse, blocky tread underneath.

The upper is constructed from knitted mesh with a pattern of perforated dots across the vamp, allowing the shoe to breathe where it matters. Along the sole edge runs a striped, ribbed band that rises up to join the upper to the midsole, and the model name is printed in large letters on the side. The laces are reflective and the heel area is reinforced with a contrasting panel.

Within the model there are several branches. In addition to the standard version there are editions with a Gore-Tex membrane for waterproofing, versions with a BOA dial instead of laces, a Zero variant without a height difference between heel and forefoot, and a Trek version that leans more toward hiking.

That the fifth generation sits so much higher on the sole fits with the broader shift in trail running, where thick midsoles have taken the place of the thin, ground-hugging models of a decade ago.
