This is the shoe that made the NBA write a letter. Not the Air Jordan 1, no matter how persistent that story is — that one wasn’t even on the court in the fall of 1984.

What you see on the shoe itself

Place it next to an Air Jordan 1 and the silhouette looks strikingly similar. Then look at the markings. On the side panel is a regular Swoosh, there’s no Jumpman, and the Wings logo is absent from the ankle. That’s not a variant or simplification: this model predates Jordan Brand. The Jumpman simply didn’t exist yet.

Why Jordan wore it

When his first season began, his own shoe wasn’t ready. The Air Ship was a regular Nike basketball shoe worn by other players as well, and so became his debut shoe by necessity. In a black-and-red colorway, and that’s where the problem started: the competition rules at the time required shoes to match the team uniform.

What is certain and what was sold

The NBA letter about that dress code is real. The amount that’s always mentioned — five thousand dollars per game — mainly comes from Nike’s own advertising campaign, and was never well documented. That campaign also linked the story to the Air Jordan 1, because that was the shoe that had to be sold. The Air Ship got the problem, the AJ1 got the fame.

Nike or Jordan?

Both, depending on when you look. Originally a Nike, since Jordan Brand did not yet exist. The current reissues do appear under Jordan Brand, because the story now belongs there. A beast that only got a name afterward.
