The Chuck 70 is Converse’s attempt to make its own classic better than the original. The model is recreated from the 1970s version, with heavier canvas, more cushioning and a taller rubber sidewall than the standard Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. Put the two side by side and you can immediately see this is the heavier of the two.
The differences are in the details. The canvas is thicker and more tightly woven, the rubber toe cap is higher and features a double row of stitching, and a black stripe runs along the midsole that the standard version lacks. There is a slightly yellowed rubber heel patch and the insole has thicker padding, making the model much more wearable over a full day. The ankle label also carries a black-and-white design instead of the blue of the standard edition.
The low version is the more commonly worn of the two heights, precisely because the Chuck was originally a basketball shoe and the high collar adds little on the street. The bottom remains the flat, patterned rubber sole the model started with in 1917.
