The Magic Speed is the shoe with which Asics aims to bridge the gap between training and racing. Racing models with a carbon plate are expensive and wear out quickly; training shoes lack the stiffness that makes running fast easier. The Magic Speed sits between those models: it has a plate, but a construction that can handle daily use.
The midsole shows that compromise. There is a carbon plate in it, but it does not run the full length and is less stiff than in the brand’s top model. Around it are two foam types, with the more responsive material on top and a firmer layer underneath; the foam’s designation is printed on the side, with the model name embossed on the heel section. The upper is a thin woven layer with the crossed brand stripes over it.
The fourth generation was tuned noticeably softer, making the shoe feel more like a trainer and less like a toned-down racer. That fits the audience: runners who want one shoe for tempo work, shorter-distance races and faster long runs.
Within the lineup the Asics Superblast 2 is the plate-free counterpart with more foam, while the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 and the Nike Alphafly serve the pure racing segment.
