About Air Jordan Son of Mars

A Jordan built from other Jordans

The Air Jordan Son of Mars is not a new design but a collage: a hybrid that brings parts from several classic Jordans together into one shoe. It appeared in 2012 as a counterpart to the Spizike, following the same idea. The name refers to Mars Blackmon, the character Spike Lee played in the famous Jordan ads of the 1980s. It’s Jordan history, cut into pieces and reassembled.

Which part comes from where

The construction is almost a quiz for connaisseurs. The midsole with the visible air unit and the tongue come from the Air Jordan 5. The lower part of the upper carries the elephant print from the Air Jordan 3, the same print Michael wore when he won the 1988 Slam Dunk contest. The ankle piece with the side cushions is taken from the Air Jordan 6, the mesh on the tongue from the Air Jordan 4, and the strap across the forefoot from the Jordan 20.

Family of the Spizike

The Son of Mars belongs to a small group of hybrid Jordans. The best known of these is the Spizike, which combines pieces from the III, IV, V, VI and IX. Where the Spizike was the first with that idea, the Son of Mars is the successor with its own mix. Both were born from the Spike Lee ads and are named for that.

A shoe full of details

Because the Son of Mars draws from so many sources, it’s full of details: a strap, ankle protection, an air unit, prints and different materials together. That makes it busy and recognisable at the same time. It’s not a clean, minimal silhouette, but rather a celebration of how many iconic parts Jordan has accumulated over the years.

What varies by version

The hybrid construction, the strap and the elephant print remain the same across versions. What changes is the distribution of materials and finishes across the different panels. Put two versions next to each other and the construction is the same; the finishing decides which part stands out most.
