The XLG is adidas at its most exaggerated. The name stands for extra large, and that’s exactly what the model does: everything a running shoe has, but bigger. A sole that runs around the foot like a cast block, metallic silver panels that wave along the side like fins, and a silhouette more reminiscent of a concept car than a sports shoe.
The execution is strikingly consistent. The silver strips sit in relief over a mesh base and continue into the sole edge, where they blend into the foam. The midsole curls up at the heel into a thick, translucent point, and the lacing stays low and small to heighten the contrast with the volume beneath. The brand logo sits small on the upper, as if the model no longer needs it.
The shoe belongs to a broader movement where brands inflate their silhouettes until they become almost caricatural. Where adidas classics rely on restraint, this model does the opposite and seeks attention.
