About adidas Rivalry
Adidas Rivalry: the basketball shoe that carries its year in its name
The Rivalry dates from 1986, the year when the fight for the basketball court really kicked off. Adidas countered the rising competition with a leather model, and that shoe looks remarkably intact today. On this page you’ll therefore often see the name followed by a number: Rivalry 86 Low and Rivalry Low 86 are the same version, with the year marking the starting point.
What you see in the photos reveals the origin. The three stripes are not solid bands but perforated, with rows of punched holes running through the leather: ventilation where the foot gets warmest. In the sole’s sidewall, adidas is spelled out in full with the trefoil logo pressed next to it into the rubber, a detail that recurs on every version. The high version adds a padded collar and a mesh panel on the flank, plus an extra top eyelet.
The low cut dominates the range, but there are other variants. Lux denotes the more richly finished leather versions, and a handful of titles carry Y-3 in the name: that’s Yohji Yamamoto’s designer line, which put its own spin on the silhouette. Collaborations show up here more often than with comparable models, because a plain leather upper is a versatile base.
Within the adidas house the Rivalry sits alongside the Forum, the better-known basketball classic from that same mid-eighties period, with its ankle strap as trademark. And on the other side of the rivalry in the name: the Nike Dunk, released in 1985 for exactly the same college courts. That fight was never settled, and on this page you can simply view the other side of it.
