The F50 marks the return of a name that shaped a generation of footballers. Adidas released the model in 2004 as the lightest football boot the brand could make, and it became Lionel Messi’s shoe in his early years, with later versions featuring an interchangeable soleplate that were at the time regarded as exemplars of technology. After a hiatus of years the name returned.
Its recognisability lies in the lightweight premise. Where the shoe was already built minimally back then, the modern version is even more so: thin synthetic layers, a snug, form-fitting fit and a soleplate that varies by surface. The name now covers more than the pitch.
