Tony Alva and the Vans Era
Tony Alva is an American skateboarder and was involved in the development of the Vans Era in the 1970s, the first shoe that Vans deliberately made for skaters. We associate almost five hundred variants of that model with his name. The Era is a low shoe with a padded collar and a vulcanized sole with a waffle tread. That collar was the main addition compared to the existing model: it absorbs the impacts a skate shoe endures every day. Otherwise as little as possible was changed. The upper is attached to the sole rather than glued, which keeps the construction sturdy, and that is the reason the shape has hardly changed since.
The difference between the versions is therefore in color and material, not in the construction. Alongside the standard Era is the Era 95, which stays closer to the original concept. Canvas is the most common upper; suede and corduroy also appear. Because the model has been produced for decades, both the plain basic versions and the bold colorways are generally available in a wide range of sizes.
