Nathan Swartz bought in 1952 the shoe company that would later be called Timberland, thereby laying the foundation for the 6 inch boot that made the brand famous. The 6-inch owes its name to the shaft height and was originally made as a work boot. The upper consists of a single piece of nubuck leather with seam-welded seams, so no water can enter through the stitching. Beneath that is a rubber sole with a coarse tread and the yellow stitching that makes the model recognizable. That design has changed little since its introduction, even when the boot began to be worn outside of work.
The distinction between versions therefore lies in color, type of leather and lining, not in the construction. Besides the well-known yellow version, a wide range of dark and solid-color versions are offered within the inch series. There are also lower and higher shafts within that same series, built on the same last.
