James Carnes is linked at adidas to a small range of 1990s basketball models: the Crazy 8 and the Crazy 97. Both models come from an era when a basketball shoe closed high around the ankle and tended to be heavy. The upper is leather with a padded collar, the sole is thick and rises up the side to keep the foot in place. The Crazy 97 added a visible spring element in the heel, which at the time was the line's distinguishing feature and is immediately noticeable on the side.
What is sold now are reissues: the same shape, with colorways that either reference the original or differ from it. The selection is limited and therefore changes more than current models: a version that's in your size today may be gone from the same shop next week.
