Kevin Durant now has a signature line that’s older than some of the people wearing it, and the KD 19 is the latest step in a series that stands out mainly for how reliably Nike releases it year after year. That’s not a criticism of the shoe — a good performance basketball shoe is still a good performance basketball shoe — but it is a reason not to jump straight into hype mode.
And then there’s the “Candy Apple”. Despite its colorway name packed with names — University Red, University Gold, Stadium Green — this is, in practice, an almost entirely monochrome red shoe, finished in high gloss: a candy-red, almost lacquered finish with a molded lightning overlay on the side and a Swoosh in the same shade. The gold and green are little more than pinpricks. On the court, under bright indoor lights, I completely get the glossy red; that’s where it works and belongs. Outside the gym, it’s a statement not everyone wants to make, and that’s fine — as long as you know you’re buying a basketball shoe, not a lifestyle sneaker.
What I would keep an eye on: it has only just launched — today, to be precise — and you can tell. One shop on Solezilla, starting at €135, and a Hypescore of 42 that’s still sitting in CHARGING. So there’s no need to panic, and no resale frenzy either. That’s good news for your wallet: you rarely need to pay above retail for performance models, and if you’re patient, you’ll often see them discounted once the KD 20 is announced.
Good-looking shoe, clear purpose, glossy finish. Let’s just not pretend the basketball world has been reinvented.
