The VaporMax is the first Air Max with the air units placed directly under the foot, without a foam midsole in between. So you literally walk on air. That resulted in a low, transparent sole and a silhouette you recognize immediately. The upper is knitted and pulled tight across the instep, leaving little material and keeping the weight low. Subsequent model years have kept that premise and mainly differ in the layout of the air units.
The main branches are the VaporMax Flyknit, the VaporMax 2021 and the VaporMax 360, which extends the air unit around the foot. They mainly differ in sole height and in whether the upper closes high around the ankle or stays low. Colorways range from solid black to transparent versions where the air unit remains visible.
