Some Air Max 1s you buy for the story, some you buy because they just look good. The Nike Air Max 1 “La Ville Lumière” (DQ9326-100) tries to do both at once, which usually ends in a shoe that wants too much. This one gets away with it. I’d kept it on my list for a while, mostly to find out whether that shimmer panel would be too much in real life.
Quieter than the name suggests
The base is calmer than you’d expect. The toe, mudguard and lace overlays are off-white leather, closer to cream than bright white. The midsole is white, the outsole a translucent grey, and there’s a small piece of navy tucked into the heel of the sole. The Swoosh is white and barely announces itself. So far, a light, easy Air Max 1 you’d slide under jeans without thinking.
The trick is in the side and heel mesh. It’s iridescent: in the photo it shifts from pale blue to yellow to a soft pink glow depending on where the light falls. And yes, that pink is exactly where my eye went first. It isn’t a pink panel, it’s a sheen, and I’m not objective the second there’s any pink involved, so read this with a grain of salt. What I can say fairly: from a distance the shoe reads as white with a faint gloss, and only up close do the colours start to move. Then the details you can’t miss — a navy tongue tab reading “3.26”, and two silver charms on the laces, one with that date and one shaped like a tiny Air Max sole. The 3.26 is 26 March, Air Max Day, because the first Air Max 1 landed on that date in 1987. This colourway came out on Air Max Day 2022, and the name nods to Paris, the city of light. It all lines up, but you don’t need to know any of it to like the shoe.
Take the charms off first
The charms are lovely in the box and on the photo, but on the laces they tap against each other and the leather as you walk. I’d take them off and keep them safe, and you’re left with a light cream Air Max 1 with a subtle shimmer panel. Worn like that it’s surprisingly easy: under light denim, a beige or grey trouser, a dress with a long coat. It claims no colour, so it fights with nothing. This is a women’s release and most shops run roughly from 35.5 into the low 40s, so plenty of people with a regular men’s foot can wear it too. Practical point: cream leather and light mesh show dirt sooner than plain white, so a protector spray before the first wear isn’t a waste here.
What it costs on Solezilla.com
Right now we’re comparing eight active listings from seven shops, and all of them are in euros — there’s no UK or US offer on this one at the moment, so pounds-and-dollars shoppers should factor in shipping and import. The good news is the range is tight and friendly: it starts around €109 and tops out near €169, a mix of regular webshops and marketplaces. For an Air Max Day release you can no longer buy from Nike, that’s gentle. The “from” price still depends on your size, though, so pick your size first and then compare sellers on the La Ville Lumière page. Our Hypescore has it at 80, still in the ATOMIC band, so people are clearly still looking. The rest of the family sits on the Nike page if you feel like browsing.
