New Balance 740 “White / Marsh Green” (U740GR2): white with a green edge, would I wear it?

New Balance 740 White / Marsh Green (U740GR2)

The New Balance 740 stands a little in the shadow of the 9060 and the 530, and maybe that’s exactly why I find it interesting. It’s a slimmer silhouette than the 9060, with a lower sole and fewer swooping lines, but the same early-2000s runner look. This “White / Marsh Green” make-up arrived, by our records, in October 2024, and it’s still widely available.

On the photo the base is a light, open mesh in off-white. Over it sit silver overlays with a thin dark-green outline, and that green runs as linework right across the side: past the toe, around the N and back to the heel. The N itself is a deep green, the loudest element on the shoe. The midsole is cream rather than bright white, with a light-green panel at the heel reading “ABZORB” and a few dark-green sections of outsole underneath. What strikes me is that there are really only two colours, white and green, and it still doesn’t look flat thanks to the silver in between. No pink anywhere, and yes, that’s a small miss for me, but it’s also exactly why this shoe stays so calm.

Would I wear it myself?

Yes, and I don’t say that about every white sneaker. The green is dark enough not to turn loud, and the silver underneath takes the sharpness off. Under a light jean, beige trousers or grey joggers the white works as the base and the green as the accent. Put a dark or army-green layer on top and you get an outfit that hangs together without looking planned. Keep it fully neutral and it just goes under black, where the N still stands out and the rest doesn’t.

The mesh upper makes it airy, which is no small thing for a shoe you’ll wear a lot in spring and summer. The downside is that white mesh shows dirt; this is one you take a soft brush to now and then. The cream midsole helps, because small marks read less harshly there than on a bright-white sole. I can’t say anything certain about the fit of this exact pair without having worn it; between two sizes, lay the New Balance size chart next to the sizes each shop has in stock.

Hype and price

For a quiet white-and-green 740, its Hypescore is surprisingly high, sitting in the ATOMIC band at 77. I read that mostly as the model itself charging up: the 740 is being searched more lately, and the votes and resale numbers behind this colourway move with it. The retail price was €110. On Solezilla.com we see it at nine shops in euros, and the spread is wide: GOAT shows a listing at €55 and StockX around €93, then the pack runs from about €122 at Side Kicks up through Collect District, Stadium Goods and both Farfetch feeds to €195 at Geturbrick. That low GOAT number is the kind of outlier you check the size on before you get excited.

Unlike most of the pairs we track, this one does have a listing beyond the euro zone: Stadium Goods shows it at roughly £79 in the UK and around $104 in the US. One offer each, so not much choice there, but at least a reference point if you’re not shopping in euros.

My honest summary: not a shoe that demands attention, but one you’ll reach for often when you want something quick that does a little more than a plain white sneaker. Compare the prices and sizes of the New Balance 740 “White / Marsh Green” on Solezilla before you choose; with this much gap between shops, it’s worth it.
