The Nike Ja 4 “Dark Mode” (IM4135-001) dropped on 4 September, almost four weeks ago now, and the honest answer to the question of what has happened since is: not much. That isn’t a complaint about the shoe. It’s the plan.
Read only the colour name and you expect a pair painted shut. The photo tells a slightly different story. The upper is black, covered almost entirely in a fine studded diamond texture that gives the Ja 4 its technical look. But there’s chrome on it too: a mirrored Swoosh on the side and a chrome panel on the forefoot with a slice of bright blue in it, the shade Nike calls Cobalt Bliss. A touch of the same blue sits on top of the tongue. Black outsole, black collar, and that’s it.
That’s more contrast than “Dark Mode” suggests. It’s also the only thing about the shoe that invites a conversation.
The workhorse, not the headline
This is Ja Morant’s fourth signature, and this colourway is a general release. No draw, no limited run, no story about a city or a monument. It’s the colour a brand makes when it wants volume rather than attention: the pair that stays on the shelf, that schools and teams buy, that gets restocked all season. Every signature line needs two or three of those a year, because they pay for the rest. Nothing wrong with that. It just helps to know you’re looking at the workhorse and not at the pair the line will be remembered for.
The market agrees. The Hypescore sits at 8, which is INERT, the bottom phase on our scale. Radio silence. For a basketball shoe that people actually play in, that’s not an insult.
The price is the most interesting number
In the US the retail price is $130, which is low for a modern signature basketball shoe and exactly where the Ja line has aimed from the start: staying within reach of the age group that actually plays in it.
On Solezilla.com the European picture is now visible too. Nike’s own listing sits at €129.99. Above that there’s Stadium Goods at around €201 and Geturbrick at €210, which is a premium you pay for convenience or a specific size, not for scarcity. And there’s one StockX listing at €891. I’ll leave that one without comment, other than that it says more about the listing than about the shoe. Everything we track is in euros, so if you’re in the UK or the US, you’re either buying from your local Nike or paying shipping and import on top.
The Dark Mode page shows those four shops side by side, and the other colourways are on the Nike Ja 4 overview. My verdict is sober appreciation: a fine shoe in a fine colourway that never pretended to be an event. I’m not the only voice here, though. Grail or Bail?
