As a monster, I feel most at home in a thick hide. And this shoe? It has one you’ll almost want to stroke before putting it on.
Let’s start with the bizarre fact, because it deserves the attention. The Converse SHAI 001 is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s first signature shoe, and it features a Nike Zoom Air-unit. Read that again. A Converse. With Nike cushioning. Just look at the side of the sole: it says AIR ZOOM, black on sand, as if no one would find that remarkable.
If that sounds strange to you, it really isn’t. Converse has been part of Nike since 2003; you just rarely see that relationship reflected so literally in the technology. Usually, a Converse is a Converse and a Nike is a Nike. Here, the two houses merge: Converse’s chassis and attitude, Nike’s inner workings. That alone makes this one of the more interesting basketball drops right now.
But you’re here for the hide. So am I.
Shed from something bigger
The “Slither” isn’t a colorway with a little snake on the toe. This is all-over. From the tongue to the midsole to the underside of your foot: that scaled print is everywhere, sand-colored with dark brown patches that twist across the surface like a real python. The thick synthetic upper catches the light slightly differently on every scale, and the result is a shoe that looks like it was peeled off something. As if some larger beast is out there, having simply left this layer behind.
And that’s where the charm lies. There are shoes you buy with your eyes. This is one you buy with your fingers. You want to pick it up. Somewhere between snakeskin and elephant hide, rough enough to feel alive and sleek enough to wear. I’ve been stomping around in the same skin for centuries, so trust me: you can feel good hide. This one, you can feel.
And to be clear: this isn’t the first time a snake has slithered across a Nike family member. Pascal recently pulled an old pair from his closet that was already playing the same game — the Stüssy × Nike Air Flight ’89, with that same reptilian motif running along the side. So Nike has known for a while that scales work. The SHAI 001 takes that idea and carries it across the entire shoe instead of confining it to a single panel. From accent to full-body shedding.
The zipper completes the look. No laces crossing the instep, just a zipper that seals the entire upper, with the laces hidden underneath. It creates a closed, sock-like silhouette with no interruptions, no eyelets, just that continuous layer of scales. Exactly what you want when the idea is for the shoe to feel like one piece of skin rather than a collection of panels.
And it performs, too
Under all that theatrics, it’s still a basketball shoe. The Zoom Air provides the low, responsive bounce players need when things get fast. The outsole is built on a radial pattern, designed to grip through turns and sudden changes of direction. Shai’s signature sits on the padded tongue, a nod to his number and to the fact that he wants to be seen as a designer as much as a player. You can feel that throughout the shoe: this isn’t a safe first signature. This is someone willing to take a risk right away.
Whether the market embraces it as enthusiastically as I do? We’ll see. A fresh release like this still has to build momentum — the first numbers will trickle in once it really hits the streets, and then Solezilla will show you exactly how much energy it gives off.
