Ask ten people what size they wear in New Balance and you’ll get eleven answers. That’s not their fault. New Balance designs for feet, not size charts, and you notice it as soon as you compare their sizing ladder with the generic conversion most comparison sites blindly use. From US 7 onward, the UK column is off by half a size across almost the entire range.
Below you’ll find the complete conversion chart, followed by what to do for each model. No vague generalizations—just the numbers and the advice.

Where New Balance sizing differs
Five men’s sizes differ from what a standard chart would suggest. In New Balance, US 8 is EU 41.5, while the generic ladder uses 41. US 12 is 46.5 instead of 46. US 14 is 49 instead of 48.5. And from US 7 onward, the UK column consistently shifts: where the standard chart says UK 6, New Balance says UK 6.5.
Sounds like nitpicking. It isn’t. Half a size is the difference between a sneaker that fits and a package you’re sending straight back.
Men’s and women’s sizing are two different ladders
This is where most orders go wrong. US 8 in New Balance’s men’s sizing is EU 41.5. US 8 in the women’s sizing is EU 39. That’s a two-and-a-half-size difference, with exactly the same two numbers on the box.
With a 574 or 9060 sold in both sizing systems, the shop determines which ladder you see. If it only says “US 8” and nothing else, you’re guessing. Always check whether men’s or women’s sizing is listed under the selector, then convert back to EU from there.

Which size should you get for each model
One brand, five silhouettes, five different answers. This is exactly where a general size chart leaves you guessing.
New Balance 574
The silhouette most people picture when you say New Balance. Chunky, wide, and available in so many colorways that you could fill a closet without owning two identical pairs.
Fit: take your usual size. The toe box is roomy, while the midfoot runs snug. If you have wide feet, going up half a size is the wrong solution. The 574 comes in D, 2E, and 4E: choose the width, not the length.
New Balance 550
Low-cut, sharp, and basketball-inspired without the bulk. The 550 works with pretty much everything and never demands the attention it actually deserves.
Fit: your usual size is correct in length. Width is a different story, since this is a narrow model and there is no wider last available. If you have wide feet or wear thick socks, going up half a size is your only option.
New Balance 990
The flagship, and you can feel it in everything. More shoe, more cushioning, more money. The 990 is the reason people who never talk about sneakers suddenly start talking about sneakers.
Fit: true to size, with a little extra room. If you’re between sizes or have narrow feet, going down half a size is the better bet. Wide feet? 2E and 4E are available here, so use them.
New Balance 2002R
Looks like a shoe with all the room in the world. It isn’t. The 2002R is snugger than its silhouette suggests, which surprises almost everyone wearing it for the first time.
Fit: the length is right, but the volume isn’t always. The lining makes it narrower than its shape would suggest. If you wear thick socks or have a high instep, go up half a size. It only comes in D width, so you don’t have much room to play with.
New Balance 9060
The boldest of the bunch. Puffy and twisted, as if someone melted the 990 and decided the result looked better than the original. You either wear it or you don’t.
Fit: the most predictable of the five. Just take your usual size. Opinions vary too widely on the width to say anything useful, so we’d rather keep quiet.
Still not sure?
Measure your foot from heel to longest toe and compare that length with the cm column above. Stand up straight while measuring, do it at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest, and measure both feet. Most people have one foot that’s slightly bigger, and that’s the foot that determines your size.
The same New Balance model is sold by dozens of shops, with prices that can easily differ by fifty euros. Enter your size in the filter and you’ll immediately see who has it in your size and how much you can save by not buying from the first shop you find.
Frequently asked questions about New Balance sizing
Does New Balance run large or small?
New Balance runs true to size in length. The issue is the conversion: from US 7 onward, its UK sizing is off by half a size from the generic chart, and five EU sizes in the men’s range differ as well. So use the chart on this page rather than a standard conversion chart.
What EU size is US 9 in New Balance?
In the men’s sizing system, US 9 equals EU 42.5. In the women’s sizing system, US 9 equals EU 40.5. So the same US notation results in a different EU size, depending on which sizing system the shop uses.
Is New Balance sizing the same for men and women?
No. The same US size differs by approximately two and a half sizes. US 8 men’s is EU 41.5, while US 8 women’s is EU 39. For unisex models, the shop determines which sizing system you see, so check before ordering.
What do D, 2E, and 4E mean in New Balance sizing?
These are width sizes, not length sizes. D is the standard men’s width, 2E is wide, and 4E is extra wide. If you have wide feet, choose a wider version in your usual size rather than going up half a size.
Which New Balance model runs narrowest?
The 550 and the 2002R. The length is right in both, but they offer little volume, and neither comes in a wider version. If you have wide feet or wear thick socks, going up half a size is your only solution.
