The adidas Tokyo MJ in Brown / Dark Brown / Gum is a sneaker-ballet flat from the Snake Skin Pack: a low-profile Mary Jane silhouette with a reptile-print leather upper, elastic laces and a gum sole. On paper, that sounds like a lot going on. On foot, though, the overall look feels remarkably understated — and that’s exactly why I find it so interesting.
A Mary Jane from adidas Originals
The Tokyo MJ borrows its shape from the classic Mary Jane: low-cut and easy to slip on. adidas combines that with the ’70s terrace style of the Tokyo line, including the TOKYO logo on the heel panel. You don’t need to tie the elastic laces; just step in and go. For days when you’ll be walking a lot but don’t feel like wearing a chunky sneaker, it strikes a pleasant balance. At around 236 grams per shoe, you barely notice it.
About that print
Reptile print can quickly become too much, but it works here because the colors stay close together: warm brown on dark brown, finished with a classic gum sole. You only really notice the texture up close. That means you can wear it like an ordinary brown shoe — with jeans, a skirt or wide-leg trousers — while still giving anyone paying attention something to discover.
A quick editorial aside
At Solezilla, we have a soft spot for anything with scales — after all, our Kaijū is a reptile itself. When this Tokyo MJ came across our desks, the editorial joke practically wrote itself: if Kaijū had a daughter, these would be waiting on her doorstep. Personally, I like to think that a monster of his size simply has someone at home who understood long ago that comfort and character can easily go hand in hand.
Would I wear it myself?
Yes, honestly, I would. Not as a statement piece, but as that one shoe you end up reaching for more often than expected. The fit is true to size, so your usual size should be fine. If the print isn’t your thing, you can find more understated versions in white or black within the same Tokyo family, as well as the floral Liberty London version — but then you’ll miss the detail that makes this pair special. And if you’re a fan of animal prints, be sure to read my piece on the adidas Taekwondo Mei with cow print too.
